Description
Few breakfast items rival the versatility and flavor of breakfast sausage links. Their bold, savory taste and quick cooking time make them a staple in American households. Whether served alone or as part of a hearty casserole, these links make mornings more delicious.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground pork, turkey, or chicken
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp dried sage
- 1/2 tsp marjoram
- 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
- 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 tbsp maple syrup or brown sugar (optional)
- Natural sausage casings (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix ground meat with all seasonings and optional sweetener or spice until well combined.
- If using casings, rinse and soak them in warm water for 30 minutes.
- Attach casing to sausage stuffer and slowly fill with the meat mixture, leaving room to twist into links.
- Twist the filled sausage every 3–4 inches to form links. Alternate twisting directions for each link.
- Cut links apart with scissors if needed.
- To cook, pan-fry over medium heat for 8–10 minutes, turning occasionally, or bake at 375°F for 20 minutes, flipping halfway.
- Refrigerate raw links for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
Notes
Use a 75/25 meat-to-fat ratio for juicy sausages. Leaner meats may require added fat like olive oil. Sausage links can also be shaped into patties if casings are unavailable.
